Tips for your visit to the Geisterberg (Ghost Mountain)

Information for a carefree family outing

In order to better plan your visit to the Geisterberg in St. Johann im Pongau, here are a few tips to make it a beautiful day of adventure on our mountain.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at +43 6412 6260 or to send us an email.

+ HOW DO I GET TO GEISTERBERG?

First take the Alpendorf gondola on a 15 minute ride from the valley station in St. Johann in Salzburg to the upper mountain station. From there, take a short, leisurely hike to the Geisterberg train stop. At half-hour intervals, the Geisterberg train continues up to the center of Geisterberg with a short stop at the mid-station (Buchau Hütte hut). The train ride takes about 15 minutes. Thus it takes about 45 minutes from the valley to the center of the Geisterberg.

+ DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE GEISTERBERG TRAIN?
No, of course you do not have to take the train. There is also a beautifully landscaped trail leading up to Geisterberg and you will already pass by different game stations, such as swings and climbing towers. You should plan 45-60 minutes for the hike.
+ WHAT IS THE GEISTERBERG TRAIN?

The Geisterberg train is a tractor with a large trailer for Geisterberg visitors. There is space for 50 people and baby carriages can also be transported. It travels up and down the mountain every half hour from 09:15 to 16:30 and makes a trip to Geisterberg much more comfortable.

Tip: the Geisterberg train usually starts the first ride right at the upper mountain station of the gondola. So, if you ride up the first gondola at 09:00, you can save the 15-minute walk to the actual Geisterberg train stop.

+ WHAT WILL WE FIND ON THE GEISTERBERG?

Around the Gernkogel in St. Johann in Salzburg are more than 40 big and small adventure stations for children. Embedded in stories of mythical and natural figures, the mountain is divided into the four worlds of the fire, water, earth and air spirits. The ghost village, the climbing dragon, water features, slides, climbing towers, swings, the ghost castle, floating on a mountain lake and a viewing platform are just a few of the adventure stations.

+ WHAT CLOTHING IS RECOMMENDED?

All attractions and adventure stations on Geisterberg are outdoors. In the summer it gets quite warm on the mountain, so often a pair of shorts is enough. But you should always have something long-sleeved to wear and a raincoat with you. It gets cool quickly on the mountain and a short rain shower can come faster than you think. On really nice summer days, we recommend you pack bathing suits for the children for the water games, as it can be quite wet. And don’t forget sunscreen and headgear, as you are always exposed to the sun!

+ CAN I WEAR FLIP-FLOPS ON THE MOUNTAIN?

You can, but it is not recommended. Because most people take a few hiking trails on the Geisterberg between the numerous adventure stations, we recommend sport shoes or light hiking boots.

+ HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I PLAN FOR A GEISTERBERG VISIT?

To get the full enjoyment of the alpine amusement park, you should take at least three hours, but five hours to a full day are ideal. The gondola lift is open from 09:00 to 17:00.

Tipp: the majority of visitors go up the mountain at 11:00 o’clock. If you are a little earlier, you can save yourself some waiting time on those very beautiful days.

+ CAN I BRING A BABY CARRIAGE WITH ME?

Although most of the paths are designed for baby carriages, we recommend an outdoor stroller with good wheels. Small children are best held in a baby carrier.

+ FOOD & DRINK

We recommend that you bring some snacks for you and your children and something to drink, especially on hot days. There are two huts on Geisterberg (Buchau hut and Gernkogelalm), which would be pleased to provide you with fine regional food and cold drinks.
