These safety regulations apply to visitors to the Liechtenstein Gorge.

• Please maintain a distance
• Avoid gathering in groups and, if necessary, wait until you can enter certain areas (bridges or steps).
• Advance booking is NOT required.

From the last car park with toilet facilities, it is a walk of about 400 metres to the entrance (ticket office) of the Liechtenstein Gorge. You will find two attractive restaurants in front of and at the entrance to the Liechtenstein Gorge.

The footpath winds its way for about 1.5 km through the Liechtenstein Gorge along well-maintained paths. The walk through the gorge takes a total of about 1.5 hours (total walking time). The outward and return routes are the same – so there is no circular walk.

Due to the natural terrain, the gorge – which is accessed via steps and, in places, narrow walkways – is unfortunately not suitable for visitors in wheelchairs or with pushchairs.

It is the responsibility of each visitor to decide whether they feel able to undertake the hike. In the gorge, there are approximately 440 steps to climb and descend, and a total elevation gain of approximately 100 metres. People with walking difficulties or cardiovascular conditions are advised not to visit.

Sturdy footwear is recommended. You should also dress appropriately for the season – you should definitely bring a warmer jacket, as it is very chilly in the gorge.

You can also walk through the Liechtensteinklamm with your children. However, it is not possible to go through it with a pushchair.

For younger children, a baby carrier is recommended, as there are 440 steps to climb on the way there and back.

Dogs are generally permitted on a short lead (leashes are compulsory!). Please note that there are 440 steps (some of which are grating steps) to climb up and down. This can be a major challenge for dogs and may lead to injuries.

It is the dog owner’s responsibility to decide whether or not their dog is capable of managing the walk through the gorge, with its many steps and narrow sections where there is oncoming traffic. Experience has shown that dogs are often overwhelmed in the Liechtenstein Gorge, and therefore a visit with your dog is not recommended.

Should you nevertheless decide to visit with your dog, we strongly recommend visiting the Liechtenstein Gorge in the early morning or late afternoon. At these times of day, there are fewer visitors, making the walk significantly less stressful and safer for dogs.

Dog socks are available to buy from the gorge owner’s souvenir shop to protect your dog’s paws.

The Liechtenstein Gorge is situated on the Tauern Cycle Route and the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route. About 50 metres before the entrance, there are plenty of cycle racks and lockers for storing luggage.

The Liechtenstein Gorge is well worth a visit in both good and bad weather. On hot days, the gorge offers the perfect way to cool off, and when it rains, even more water rushes through the gorge (please ensure you wear suitable clothing, rainwear and sturdy footwear).

Extreme weather conditions, such as flooding, severe thunderstorms, snowfall or storms, may lead to the gorge being temporarily closed.

No advance booking is required for groups, but a brief notification of planned group visits would help with organisation. Payment can be made in cash or by card.

The Liechtensteinklamm is included as a one-off attraction with the SalzburgerLand Card.

Getting here by car/bus
Via the A 10 – Tauern Motorway, take the Pongau junction exit, then follow the B 311 – Pinzgau main road, via Bischofshofen for approx. 6 kilometres to St. Johann, take the “Knoten SÜD” exit. Follow the “Großarler Landesstraße” towards Alpendorf and Großarl; after approx. 700 metres, turn left and then immediately take the next right. You are now on the Liechtensteinklammstraße; follow this for a further approx. 3 km until you reach the car parks at the Liechtensteinklamm.

Getting there by public transport
From St. Johann town centre, you can reach the Liechtensteinklamm via the free Citybus (line 52). From the penultimate (Plankenauwirt) or final (Glückauf) stop, it’s an easy 30–40-minute walk to the entrance to the gorge. From the railway station, take the Citybus (line 51) and change at the post office to the Citybus (line 50).

Advance booking is NOT required to visit the Liechtenstein Gorge.

During the peak season and in bad weather, there may be longer waiting times both at the ticket office and when purchasing tickets online during peak hours, which are approximately 10.00–14.00.

We therefore strongly recommend that you plan your visit outside these peak times to ensure a more relaxed experience.

There are plenty of day-use parking spaces available right next to the Liechtenstein Gorge, which can be used free of charge during opening hours. Please note that overnight parking of motorhomes and any form of camping in the car park are not permitted!
